NightLase: Non-Invasive Treatment for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

If snoring is keeping your family awake or you've been told you may have mild sleep apnea, you may be looking for a treatment that doesn't involve surgery or wearing a CPAP machine every night. Fortunately, there is another option.
NightLase® is a laser treatment that helps reduce snoring and improve airflow while you sleep. It works by gently tightening the soft tissues in the back of the mouth and throat, helping keep the airway more open throughout the night. The procedure is quick, requires no surgery or anesthesia, and most patients return to their normal routine immediately afterward.
At Shadelands Pediatric Dentistry, we believe healthy sleep plays an important role in overall health. Whether you're seeking treatment for yourself or learning more about airway-focused care for your child, NightLase may be worth considering.
How Does NightLase Work?
NightLase uses an Er:YAG laser to deliver gentle pulses of heat to the soft tissues of the palate and throat. Rather than cutting or removing tissue, the laser stimulates natural collagen remodeling. As the tissues become firmer, they are less likely to vibrate during sleep or collapse into the airway.
Treatment takes place in two stages.
First, the NdYag laser warms the tissues inside the mouth to prepare them for treatment. Next, additional laser energy stimulates collagen production, helping tighten the tissues over time.
Each appointment typically lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. No anesthesia or sedation is needed, and most patients describe the feeling as a gentle warming sensation.
For the best outcome, most patients complete a series of three treatments over approximately six weeks, or one session per decade of life. Many begin noticing less snoring after the first visit, with continued improvement as treatment progresses.
Benefits of NightLase Therapy
Many patients appreciate NightLase because it offers a simple alternative to more invasive treatments. Some of the benefits include:
No surgery or incisions
No anesthesia required
Little to no discomfort during treatment
No recovery time
Short appointments that fit into a busy schedule
Many patients notice reduced snoring after their first treatment
Results may last a year or longer before a maintenance visit is needed
Better sleep for both the patient and family members
Because improved breathing often leads to better quality sleep, many patients also report waking up feeling more rested and alert during the day.
What Does the Research Show?
NightLase has been studied as a treatment for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea with encouraging results.
One published study reported an average 85% reduction in snoring after patients completed three NightLase treatments. Another systematic review found an overall patient satisfaction rate of 78.6%, with participants reporting meaningful improvements in snoring and sleep quality.
While results vary from person to person, these findings suggest that NightLase may be a helpful choice for patients looking for a non-surgical way to address sleep-disordered breathing.
Can Children Benefit from NightLase?
Children can also experience snoring and sleep apnea, although the causes are often different from those seen in adults. Enlarged tonsils, enlarged adenoids, tongue position, jaw development, allergies, and other airway concerns may all play a role.
Before recommending any treatment, a thorough evaluation is needed to identify the cause of your child's symptoms. Depending on the findings, treatment may include airway-focused dentistry, referral to a medical specialist, orthodontic treatment, myofunctional therapy, or other approaches.

In carefully selected cases, NightLase or TonsiLase may be included as part of a child's treatment plan. Dental lasers have been used safely in pediatric dentistry for many years and are well tolerated by most children. Every child is different, so we begin with a thorough evaluation before recommending the treatment that best fits their individual needs.
Is NightLase Right for You?
If you or your child snores regularly, wakes frequently during the night, breathes through the mouth while sleeping, or has been diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, it may be time for an airway evaluation.
At Shadelands Pediatric Dentistry, we take a whole-person approach to airway health. We'll evaluate your symptoms, discuss your medical history, and determine whether NightLase, TonsiLase, or another treatment may be the right fit.
